According to The Sun, Newcastle have submitted an enquiry over the availability of Sporting Kansas City forward Johnny Russell.
Some Newcastle supporters might remember the 31-year-old from his time at Derby, where he played under Steve McClaren.
The 14-cap Scotland international is available for free, as his contract is set to expire with the Major League Soccer outfit.
Sheffield United and Fulham are also said to be interested in Russell, who has enjoyed success over in the United States.
In 101 games for Sporting KC, the Glasgow-born forward has scored 27 goals while also providing 24 assists – he is also club captain.
The Sun claim that scouts have been left impressed by Russell’s performances.

With finances tight due to the global pandemic, Newcastle are exploring this signing as a cut-price option to take the goalscoring burden away from Callum Wilson.
In our view, Newcastle can find a better cut-price option.
Russell used to be a brilliant forward while at Derby, so much so that McClaren described him as ‘fantastic‘ back in 2014.

However, players usually go to Major League Soccer to see out their careers.
The division also isn’t comparable to the Premier League at all.
Just look at Miguel Almiron. He was arguably the best player in the US, but is now just another decent Premier League player.
In our view, Newcastle should steer clear.
