Newcastle United have reportedly tabled a €36m (£30m) offer for Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with Arsenal also chasing the Brazilian.
According to RMC Sport, the Toon have launched a bid to sign the 24-year-old in the final week of the transfer window. Guimaraes has been chased by Arsenal for most of the window, with Juventus also keen on the Ligue 1 star as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Guimaraes has been one of Lyon’s most consistent performers over the past two seasons, with the midfielder part of the Brazil squad that won Gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last year.
As per the report, Newcastle will be willing to quadruple Guimaraes’ wage should the midfielder swap Lyon for Tyneside, with the Toon’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) owners more than able to fulfil this financial demand.
With Newcastle making an offer so late in the window, it could be a race against time to sign Guimaraes with rival sides now likely to make similar bids for the Brazilian international in the coming days.
Indeed, the Ligue 1 star would be some signing for Newcastle given that the likes of Arsenal and Juventus are interested in Guimaraes. And for the Toon, it could be a move that pushes the northeast side firmly out of the relegation battle.
Guimaraes could save Newcastle from Premier League drop

Newcastle have made just the two signings this January in Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, and whilst these additions have been welcome, Guimaraes could be a real difference-maker for Eddie Howe’s side in the second half of the season.
The Lyon star has been one of the club’s best players this season and has brought an aura of quality and grace to the midfield. And for Newcastle, Guimaraes could be the upgrade needed in the centre of the park to push the Magpies far and away from the relegation zone.
