Newcastle United could reportedly launch a bid to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, a player Arsenal were chasing for the majority of the summer transfer window.
According to Jeunes Footeux, the Magpies are warming to the idea of signing the Belgian international, with Newcastle even considering a €20m (£17m) bid for the Leicester maestro, with Tielemans’ contract with the Foxes set to expire next summer.
Arsenal were reportedly interested in TIelemans for the majority of the window, however, even with injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, the Gunners never made an official bid to sign the 25-year-old, who could soon leave Leicester for free if no club comes forward with an offer.
Regarded by many as one of the best Premier League midfielders currently playing in the division, Tielemans will likely be on many clubs’ radars as we slowly approach the January transfer window, and Newcastle already plotting an offer could make the favourites to land the long-term Arsenal target.
Indeed, Mikel Arteta missing out on Tielemans will sting should Newcastle launch an offer to sign the former AS Monaco superstar, yet given how ambitious Howe’s side are and their impressive form this campaign, the Belgian could be tempted to join the St. James Park outfit this winter.
With Leicester off to their worst Premier League start in quite some years, Tielemans could be open to any change of scenery this January, and whilst Newcastle are some years away from being a UEFA Champions League club, the Toon have the financial backing and ambition to be an ideal next team for the midfielder.
Newcastle could beat Arsenal to Tielemans signing in January
Tielemans looked like a sure-fire bet to join Arsenal this summer given how many rumours were flying around on the Leicester maestro, but with the transfer window now well behind us, Newcastle could now swoop in to sign the Foxes talent right from Arteta’s noses.
Labelled as ‘special’ by David Ornstein, many Premier League clubs will be delighted to have a player as good as Tielemans on their books, and for Newcastle, signing the 25-year-old would be yet another huge statement of intent from the club given how likely the midfielder was to join Arsenal in the summer.
