Newcastle United have reportedly made RC Lens star Seko Fofana their top priority this summer, with Leeds United also chasing the Ligue 1 midfielder.
According to Le 10 Sport, the Magpies have identified the 26-year-old as their main target for the upcoming transfer window, with Fofana one of the stand-out players in France this season after a breakout year with Lens last year.
As per the report, Fofana has been ‘magnificent’ this season for Lens, with the midfielder bagging nine goals in all competitions as the Newcastle target continues to shine in Ligue 1, yet the Toon aren’t the only side interested in the Ivorian.
As reported by the Daily Mail in January, Leeds are also hot on Fofana’s tail, with Lens valuing their star man and club captain at just £14m despite the midfielder’s incredible form this season and the year prior.
Heading into the summer, both clubs are eager to strengthen in central midfield, with Newcastle showing in January that they are willing to go big on exciting players to improve the squad, and Fofana can prove just that.
Dynamic and hard to duel against in the midfield, the 26-year-old has become a superstar for Lens in the past two years. A talent who was part of Manchester City’s academy, Fofana has blossomed into a complete player, and Newcastle could now beat Leeds to his signature.
Newcastle’s Premier League finish could see them beat Leeds to Fofana

As we know, Leeds’ current form in the Premier League is sending the Yorkshire side on a downward spiral that could realistically see the Yorkshire side return down to the Championship, and the race for Fofana could be decided on if Newcastle can also avoid this.
Indeed, Fofana has shown that he is ready to play for a top club, with the Premier League suited to the Lens’ star’s game, and the battle to sign him could be down to whoever finishes higher this season out of Newcastle and Leeds, with the Magpies currently winning this race.
