Newcastle United continue to lead the race for Kristoffer Ajer and he is expected to leave Celtic before the end of the month, the Daily Record say.
Newcastle are thought to be keen to take the Celtic central defender, who has admitted that a move away from Parkhead is a real possibility this summer.
And it seems that the Norwegian’s exit may now be imminent.
The Record’s latest says that Ajer is not expected to be a Celtic player beyond the end of June.
That looks like good news for Newcastle, who are closing in on completing a deal, despite interest from others.
If Ajer was to arrive at Newcastle, he would arrive in the Premier League for the first time.
Good signing for Newcastle?
Newcastle’s defence has generally been solid, but the Magpies do have plenty of ageing players at the back, and Steve Bruce has clearly felt that a freshening up of his options is required.
Ajer would help to do that as at the age of 23, he has plenty of room to develop.
Ajer is comfortable in possession, but also very dominant aerially, with his height a huge asset, and he was recently called ‘outstanding’ by ex-Newcastle man Lee Clark amid rumours he could move to St. James’ Park (Shields Gazette).
If he was to join Newcastle he would be in competition with the likes of Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark for a starting spot.
