According to a report from Spanish media outlet Marca, Newcastle are interested in re-signing Young Boys defender Kevin Mbabu, as Rafa Benitez looks to add reinforcements to his squad before the start of the new Premier League season next week.

Mbabu left the North East in 2017, having spent four and a half years on Tyneside.

The Magpies have toiled in the transfer market this summer, although they have brought in a handful of new faces, including Yoshinori Muto and Fabian Schar.

Right-back is obviously a department where Rafa wants to improve further still, however.

Spanish publication Marca claims that Newcastle are ‘following’ Young Boys right-back Kevin Mbabu.

The Magpies won’t have things all their own way, though, according to Marca, with Real Betis, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Girona and Fulham also interested in signing the Swiss ace.

Mbabu is valued at around £8.6 million, according to Transfer Markt, and in today’s day and age that would represent excellent value for money for the Tyneside outfit.

The 23-year-old is wonderfully versatile and can play anywhere along the back-line, and that will surely appeal to Rafa ahead of what will surely be a long and physically punishing campaign.
