Newcastle United are now considering making a last-gasp bid to sign Oostende defender Jack Hendry – but face major competition.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle have now made an enquiry into signing Henry ahead of the transfer deadline.

However, so have Burnley, Sheffield United, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion as teams attempt a deadline-beating move.

Oostende took Hendry on loan last season, and after a dismal time at Celtic, he thrived in Belgium with some superb performances at the back.

Oostende turned the loan move permanent for just £1.8million earlier this summer, a fee Celtic may now regret agreeing to, but could flip him for a quick profit before the transfer window closes.

Hendry is allegedly valued at £8million by Oostende, but there is hope that a late deal worth £4million could be struck – and that’s where Newcastle could come in.

Having splashed the cash on Joe Willock, Newcastle have a very small budget to work with right now and will have to shop around for bargains.

Hendry comes into that category, and Steve Bruce could push to sign the Scotland international before the deadline.

Fabian Schar is out of contract next summer, with Hendry possibly being eyed up as his long-term replacement at St James’ Park.

With other clubs keen, Newcastle will have to move quickly to get a deal done, especially with that transfer deadline drawing ever closer.
