Newcastle United are interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips and have been discussing a summer move.

The Magpies appear to be in the market for a new midfielder this summer, preferably one who can sit in front of the back four.

That would allow Bruno Guimaraes to get forward freely and a number of options have been mentioned.

Phillips is now an option with a new report from The Telegraph suggesting that Newcastle are having internal discussions about a move for him.

Other midfielders are mentioned but Phillips will represent an interesting option after a difficult season.

City struck a £45million deal last summer as Phillips traded Elland Road for the Etihad Stadium, leaving Leeds United.

Phillips had been a star player in Yorkshire but has found very different circumstances in Manchester.

Phillips hasn’t even started a single league game for City and has managed just 102 minutes of Premier League action across seven substitute appearances.

That just isn’t enough for Phillips, especially with Euro 2024 coming into focus, and a summer exit could materialise.

Eddie Howe has wanted Kalvin Phillips for a long time

Newcastle would have to pay fairly big money for Phillips with City no doubt wanting their money back if they do sell the midfielder.

The Magpies would also be banking on Phillips getting back to his best form and fitness after a difficult year at City.

Boss Eddie Howe may well believe in Phillips having been a fan of him for a while now.

The Daily Mail reported back in 2019 that Howe wanted to bring Phillips to Bournemouth.

No deal was done back then but some four years on, Howe may well be able to sign Phillips after all.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by pundit Danny Higginbotham, Phillips needs to get back to his best – and Newcastle could offer an escape route away from City.
