According to Calciomercato, Newcastle United are interested in signing Empoli midfielder Miha Zajc – but face competition from Huddersfield Town.
The Magpies need reinforcements during the January transfer window, and adding a playmaker is important for Rafael Benitez in a bid to spark some attacking flair.
Links to Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron have really died down in recent weeks, but a new name in the frame appears to be Empoli’s Zajc.
Calciomercato report that Zajc wants to leave Empoli this month, and he could be heading to the Premier League with Huddersfield and Newcastle now keen.
It’s claimed that Zajc will be available for just €5million to €6million (£4.5million to £5.37million), making him something of a bargain for Newcastle, who don’t have tons of cash to spare.
Zajc, 24, has notched two goals and two assists in Serie A this season, and showed his quality as a goalscoring midfielder last season with eight goals in Empoli’s promotion-winning campaign.
A Slovenian international with three goals in 11 caps, Zajc has real quality on the ball and could feature as a No. 10 in Benitez’s 4-2-3-1 system.
He may not be a big name, but Zajc could be a smart signing for Newcastle, and could become another major bargain for Benitez just like goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
