Belgian outlet HLN have claimed that Newcastle United are among the Premier League clubs interested in signing AS Monaco playmaker Youri Tielemans before Thursday evening’s deadline.

Tielemans, 21, has struggled at Monaco after joining the French club from Belgian side RSC Anderlecht, where he had captained the side despite being a teenager and became renowned as one of the best young European talents around.

The box-to-box midfielder scored 18 goals and created 15 more from midfield in 53 league and cup appearances for Anderlecht throughout 2016-17, and that earned him a £21.7million (HLN) move to Monaco.

However, he has struggled with the French club, scoring just five goals in 65 league and cup appearances. His form has coincided with Monaco’s dismal season, which sees them sit in 19th place and Thierry Henry sacked.

The re-arrival or Leonardo Jardim is bad news for Tielemans, who has previously criticised the midfielder. It is a stark contrast to the opinion of Henry, who highly-rated Monaco’s number eight and even gave him the captain’s armband.

The report claims that Leicester City wanted to sign Tielemans from Monaco, in a deal that would see Adrien Silva move to Monaco as loan swap deal. But little progress has been made, as per the report.

It is believed Tottenham have a long-standing interest in the midfielder, but are ‘hesitant’ to enter the market. Newcastle are also credited with a link, but a move to Leicester remains most likely.

Newcastle are yet to make any signings this month after Jordan Lukaku’s loan from Lazio fell through due to a medical. The club are after a left-back, number 10, central midfielder and a striker.
