A claim has been made that Newcastle United have opened talks to complete a transfer for Tottenham Hotspur outcast Lucas Moura.

It was reported in January by the Athletic that the £23 million (BBC Sport) was set to leave Spurs at the end of his expiring contract in the summer.

It seems like Newcastle United are keen on capitalising on the situation by getting a transfer for Lucas Moura over the line on a free.

Newcastle keen on Moura transfer

The Brazilian winger is yet to start a single game for the London-based side this season and has made four appearances for the Under-21s.

While Moura may be associated for his unintentional last-minute assist for Diogo Jota’s winner in his side’s recent 4-3 defeat to Liverpool, Jose Mourinho once branded his versatility as ‘amazing’ via the club’s official website.

As Lucas Moura will leave Tottenham in search of a new transfer destination this summer, Torcedores have claimed that Newcastle have opened talks with his representatives over a move.

It has also been stated that the likes of Marseille, Lazio and Roma are also interested in signing the 30-year-old.

Another suitor is Flamengo but the player has a desire to play his football in Europe for now.

HITC View: Newcastle should steer clear of this move

While some may overly focus on the fact that Moura is available on a free transfer, Newcastle could simply aim higher in the market next season.

It looks likely that Eddie Howe’s side are set to qualify for the Champions League, which means they are likely to attract bigger and better players in their prime ages.

Apart from his pace, Moura simply does not offer much else and that has been the story for most of his time in the English capital.

For Newcastle to now even pursue his signature when Lucas Moura is past his very best is absurd.
