Report: Newcastle in Miguel Almiron race after Benitez’s Ashley talks

Newcastle United have reportedly joined several of their Premier League rivals in the race to sign £11 million-rated Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle have become the latest Premier League side to take an interest in Miguel Almiron ahead of the January transfer window, according to The Sun on Sunday (28/10; page 59).

The report suggests that Mike Ashley is ready to let Rafa Benitez spend some money in January. The Magpies owner has apparently accepted that relegation will be on the cards if the manager is not allowed to strengthen the squad – despite the uncertainty over Benitez’s future.

And The Sun on Sunday (28/10; page 59) suggests that Almiron is on Newcastle’s shopping list after several scouting trips. The Paraguayan is also being lined up by West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal and could cost around £11 million.

The report hints that Newcastle and West Ham are currently making the bigger waves, with Spurs and the Gunners only showing tentative interest at this stage.

But given Almiron’s current form, it appears inevitable that he will have a lengthy queue of clubs after his signature when January arrives. The Atlanta United talisman has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists from attacking midfield, but he can also prove a threat up front.

With one game left in the regular season, Atlanta have qualified for the Eastern Conference semi-finals in Major League Soccer. Almiron has been a key reason for their success, and keeping him is going to be a tough task.

Similarly, it appears that it is going to be difficult for Newcastle to win the race. But having only scored in one of their last five games in the Premier League, it has arguably become imperative for Benitez to add to his attacking options in January if the Magpies are to stand a chance of staying in the top flight.
