Newcastle United are reportedly planning to make a swift move to replace Chancel Mbemba after his move away from St James’ Park.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle are hoping to tie up a deal to sign Fabian Schar after Chancel Mbemba sealed his move away from St James’ Park, joining Porto.

Mbemba has been heavily linked with the Magpies exit for a while now, having not played for Rafa Benitez’s side since their FA Cup defeat to Chelsea back in January.

The Chronicle reports that Mbemba has left for around £5 million, and Benitez is now looking to swiftly fill the void that the DR Congo international has left behind – and make a profit on the two deals at the same time.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are looking to tie up a deal to sign Schar, who is available for just £3 million following Deportivo La Coruna’s relegation from La Liga last season.

It would appear that Benitez’s desire to get Schar through the door on Tyneside has increased now that Mbemba has headed to Portugal. And it could certainly be argued that it would be a fantastically shrewd piece of business from Newcastle.

Schar is an experienced international defender who represented Switzerland at the World Cup, and he is young enough to improve further under the right coach. A potential deal for the 26-year-old appears to signal something of a compromise between Benitez and the club’s hierarchy as he is able to land one of his targets and the board can reflect on two very impressive pieces of business.

It may not be ideal in Benitez’s eyes, but unfortunately, it appears that he may have little choice at this stage.
