Newcastle United are reportedly looking to tie up a deal for Stoke City’s Joselu.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United hope to agree a £5million deal to sign Stoke City striker Joselu this week after having one bid rejected.
The Magpies opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, with Jonjo Shelvey’s red card giving Rafael Benitez’s men an uphill battle.
Whilst Dwight Gayle was passed fit to play following a recent battle with injury, it was again clear that Newcastle don’t quite have enough firepower right now, with Aleksandar Mitrovic their only other recognised centre forward following Daryl Murphy’s move to Nottingham Forest.
The Daily Mail now report that Newcastle are hoping to tie up a deal for Stoke City forward Joselu this week, with the move expected to cost around £5million.
The Stoke Sentinel claimed earlier this month that Newcastle had failed with a derisory bid for Joselu, which was some way short of the alleged £12million offer made by the Magpies, with Stoke simply looking to recoup a chunk of the £5.75million they spent on in 2015.
A £5million fee may therefore be enough to tempt Stoke into a deal, especially given that Joselu wasn’t even on the bench for the Potters’ 1-0 defeat away at Everton on Saturday, though he has been on paternity leave.
Joselu, 27, was on the books with Real Madrid following a 2009 move from Celta Vigo, and had spells in Germany with Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover, before joining Stoke in 2015.
The Spaniard hit just four goals in his first season with Stoke, and spent last season on loan with Deportivo La Corina notching six goals in 24 games before returning to Stoke, where he seemingly has little future.
