According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have tabled a new contract offer in a bid to keep hold of Matty Longstaff this summer.
Sky Sports revealed recently that the younger of the Longstaff brothers has reached an impasse with the club in contract talks.
Newcastle had reportedly offered a long-term deal on £15,000-a-week wages but the youngster has a better offer on the table.
Serie A side Udinese have offered a deal worth double of what the Magpies had initially tabled. Longstaff would also receive a sizeable signing on fee and it was expected that he would move to Italy this summer.
However, Newcastle seem to have woken up now and are prepared to offer more money in order to keep hold of their young midfielder.
The Telegraph claim that the Magpies have offered to pay him wages in excess of £20,000-a-week in an attempt to keep him at the club beyond the end of this season.
Longstaff burst onto the scene earlier this season with a fantastic winner against Manchester United. He has been a fan-favourite since and losing him will not go down well with the supporters.
It is still unclear if Longstaff will accept Newcastle’s new terms. With just a few weeks left on his current deal, the youngster is in a strong position during negotiations and he will try to make the most of it.
Staying at Newcastle alongside his brother will likely be better for his development considering that he is still only 20 years old. However, a good deal elsewhere will not be easy to turn down, which puts the Magpies at the risk of losing a quality youngster for free this summer.
