The Northern Echo claim that Newcastle United have a long-standing interest in signing PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands star Cody Gakpo and will have to spend north of £40million to sign the Arsenal and Manchester United.
Gakpo, 23, has had a hand in 30 goals for PSV this season – scoring 13 goals and laying on 17 assists in 24 games. TeamTalk report Liverpool and Manchester United are both interested in signing Gakpo, ahead of the January window.
A move to the Premier League almost came about in the summer. Leeds had an agreement but going into the morning of deadline day, a move fell through. United and Southampton were also linked. Now, bigger clubs are interested.
Newcastle are at the table. The Northern Echo say the Toon have a long interest in Gakpo. They will need to spend north of £40m to sign him. He was on a list drawn up by the club back in the Autumn, and the interest is still standing.

Newcastle have long-standing interest in Gakpo, Arsenal and United keen
What a signing Gakpo would be for Newcastle. If they managed to get a deal for the World Cup sensation over the line, it would be a massive statement of intent. It would show the other big Premier League clubs, they mean business.
Now of course, Newcastle have already done that with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Alex Isak. But can they convince Gakpo to ignore the lure of some Europe’s biggest clubs to move to Tyneside next month?
Newcastle look good for a European finish but Gakpo is already showing the kind of form that a Champions League club will want to buy. So, it might be that they have to appeal to Gakpo in another way. Or, finish in the top four.
