The Athletic claim Newcastle United have held talks with two other Lyon players this month, after completing the signing of Bruno Guimaraes. The midfielder completed a potential club-record move to the Toon on Sunday.
Bruno, 24, became Newcastle’s third signing of the January window after moves for Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier. Brighton defender Dan Burn is expected to be a fourth and more are likely to arrive on Tyneside.
The Brazil ace might not be the only player Newcastle sign from Lyon over the next couple of windows. Indeed, The Athletic report that Newcastle have also spoken to Lyon over two of Bruno’s old teammates.
They are, Belgian defender Jason Denayer – who played for Manchester City, Sunderland and Celtic – and Moussa Dembele, again, an ex-Celtic player. A deadline-day move looks unlikely, but they are players of interest.
Newcastle hold talks for Denayer and Dembele: Deadline-day moves?
Newcastle are likely to be after a striker on deadline day, as well as another centre-back alongside Burn. Whether the Toon can strike said deals in the coming hours remains to be seen – but Denayer and Dembele fit the bill.
Dembele, though, is unlikely to go this summer – despite entering the last 18 months of his contract at Lyon. He would want to be first choice and given Newcastle have spent £25million on Chris Wood, it seems unlikely.
A move for Denayer would be much more realistic – but his ex-Sunderland past might be an issue for Newcastle supporters. But that powerhouse, Premier League proven centre-back is something Newcastle want.
