Newcastle United have discussed a deal for Daniele Rugani and hope to agree a season-long loan for the West Ham United-linked defender, with the option of a permanent transfer next summer, according to The Northern Echo.
West Ham were said to be leading the race for Rugani earlier this week, as the only club who had taken official steps towards signing him (Alfredo Pedulla).
It was claimed that Juventus wanted €18-20 million (£16.4-18.2m) for the Italy international and were reluctant to agree a temporary move.
Rennes have also been strongly linked with Rugani.
But, as far as The Northern Echo is concerned, there have been no offers tabled at this stage and Newcastle officials hope to hold further talks before the weekend.
There is also said to be an expectation, from the Newcastle end, that alternative options could be offered to them in the final few days of the summer transfer window.
Both Newcastle and West Ham were among the clubs credited with an interest in Rob Holding.
But the Arsenal defender has started all three of his side’s Premier League fixtures this season, forcing the Magpies and Hammers to look elsewhere, it seems.
Neither Newcastle nor West Ham have managed to strengthen their central defensive options this summer.
