According to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, West Ham have rejected a bid from Newcastle for young right-back Harrison Ashby.

The Hammers are seemingly holding out for a higher fee for the ‘tremendous’ defender, who has been a standout player for their U21 team.

Newcastle have been linked to Ashby for some time now and are in the market for a young understudy for Kieran Trippier – who has just signed a new contract.

The Magpies have also been linked to Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda, but it seems that they may now be focusing their attention on Ashby.

This development could be a major boost for Arsenal, who have also been linked to Fresneda. With Newcastle potentially out of the running, the Gunners may now have a better chance of landing the Spanish defender.

West Ham’s decision to reject Newcastle’s bid for Ashby shows that they clearly want to keep the player, but it may be difficult for the London club to hold onto the 21-year-old, especially as they’re currently in danger of being relegated.

On the other hand, Newcastle are currently challenging for a top-four spot and are one of the wealthiest clubs in the world. With the resources and ambition to build a team capable of competing at the highest level, Ashby would be wise to consider a move to St James’ Park if he wants to challenge for the top honours within the game in the years to come.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will return with a higher bid for Ashby or if they will continue to rival Arsenal and make a move for Fresneda.

Either way, it’s clear that Newcastle do want a new young right-back through the door this window, and it’s difficult to stop the Magpies from getting what they want these days.
