American businessman Henry Mauriss is ready to buy Newcastle United, according to the Daily Mirror.
Sources close to Mauriss say that he is watching developments at Newcastle very closely, as their takeover takes a long time to go through.
Newcastle are currently the subject of interest from Saudi-based backers, but many obstacles have been put in the way of their bid.
There are now some concerns that the takeover could be blocked by the Premier League.
If that happens it would be a major disappointment for Newcastle supporters, but it seems that Mike Ashley’s time at the club could still be coming to an end, even if the deal does fall through.

Mauriss is said to have made contact with Ashley, and would be willing to buy Newcastle, if the current bid isn’t successful.
At the moment Mauriss is happy to sit in the background, rather than make a rival bid for the Magpies.
But if things don’t work out for Newcastle’s current potential investors then Mauriss could step in.
