According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have been tracking Scott McTominay, but he’s not their number one midfield target this month.

The Magpies were linked with McTominay for quite a large portion of the summer transfer window, and according to this report, Newcastle still have an eye on the Scotland international.

Newcastle are still looking at McTominay, but his name isn’t at the top of their list for a couple of reasons. For one, he’s 26 years old and doesn’t have much room to grow further, and, perhaps more importantly, he’d be expensive.

Indeed, as a signing from Manchester United’s first-team, McTominay would command a huge fee, and while the Magpies can easily afford most players on the planet after their takeover last year, they’re not a team to spend for spending’s sake.

Newcastle have actually been very savvy with their spending so far, so going out and splashing the cash on a player like McTominay – who, with all due respect, hasn’t been lighting the Premier League up over the past couple of years, may not be too logical.

That isn’t to say that a transfer is impossible mind you. Newcastle have made some surprising signings that didn’t look to be value for money in the past – such as Chris Wood and Matt Targett, so we can’t write this one off just yet.

Standing at 6ft4, McTominay would actually be very decent in Eddie Howe’s team playing the role that Philip Billing played for Howe during his last season at Bournemouth.

Newcastle do need a new number six to complement Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes’ more forward-thinking mentalities in the midfield, and McTominay would certainly tick that box.

Keep an eye out for any movement on this front, because while McTominay isn’t at the top of Newcastle’s list right now, things can change very quickly in a January transfer window.
