Sevilla reportedly have plans in place if Newcastle United complete a late swoop for Brazilian defender Diego Carlos.
According to Marca, players are being considered to replace the 28-year-old La Liga star should Newcastle sign the defender in the final week of the transfer window. As reported by the Guardian, the Toon are in talks to sign Carlos for £30m.
Whilst a deal is yet to be agreed for the defender, the Sevilla star could make a late switch from Andalusia to Tyneside. Newcastle are eager to sign a quality centre-back this window, and Carlos appears to be their main target.
The defensive titan has been a key part of Sevilla’s squad the past three years, with Julen Lopetegui’s side sitting in an impressive second place in the La Liga standings and currently holding the best defensive record in the division.
With Newcastle heading into the winter break off the back of a 1-0 win against Leeds United, there is a jovial mood around the northeast club. And with the window closing next Monday, a new centre-back is needed for the Toon.
Indeed, Carlos looks to be the frontrunner to improve Newcastle’s backline. And with Sevilla now making plans to sign a replacement should the Magpies pull the trigger, this news could push Eddie Howe’s side to sign the Brazilian in the coming days.
Newcastle must wrap up Carlos deal as soon as possible
With Newcastle securing just their second win of the season on Saturday, building on from that victory will be paramount to the Toon’s success in climbing out of the relegation zone, as will signing Carlos this week.
The defender could be the missing link to pushing the Toon out of the bottom three when the Premier League restarts. And with a week left to go of the transfer window, Newcastle should be looking to sign Carlos as soon as possible.
