According to The Sunday Mirror (24/01, p75), Newcastle United’s talks over a new deal with Sean Longstaff are now on hold.
Longstaff has just 18 months left on his Newcastle contract, and the Magpies have been hoping to get him tied down to a new deal.
However, they now want to prioritise players who are out of contract this summer, meaning Longstaff’s deal is no longer on the immediate to-do list.
Longstaff has though appointed a new representative to sort out his contract, with super-agent Pini Zahavi now on board.
Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be keen on Longstaff, and Zahavi has close ties to Spurs; he brokered Jose Mourinho’s move there back in November 2019.
Manchester United are interested too, and bids may arrive for Longstaff in the summer if he is allowed to enter the final year of his contract.
Longstaff hasn’t really been at his best under Steve Bruce though, failing to really hit the heights that saw him become a star under Rafael Benitez.
The 23-year-old’s dip in form may mean Newcastle can fend off interest, but they are taking a real risk by seemingly halting his talks.
