According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United have given up hope of signing Manchester United defender Brandon Williams.

On Saturday, The Chronicle reported that Williams was keen to join Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season.

Positive talks between Steve Bruce and Michael Carrick had given Newcastle hope of securing a deal, but their hopes now appear over.

It’s stated that United have ruled out the possibility of Williams leaving on loan this month, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now hoping he will stay.

Williams played in the FA Cup against Watford over the weekend, and now looks set to stay at Old Trafford rather than head up to Newcastle.

The 20-year-old has found first-team football hard to come by this season, with Alex Telles and Luke Shaw at left back, whilst Aaron Wan-Bissaka is entrenched at right back.

Yet with Timothy Fosu-Mensah likely to move on, Williams could be needed as cover for Wan-Bissaka moving forward.

Missing out on a potential signing who seemingly wanted a move to Newcastle will be a blow for Steve Bruce and Magpies fans, who will he hoping for additions this month.
