Newcastle United have missed out on the signing of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United have been left furious by Daniel Sturridge’s late decision to join West Bromwich Albion instead of heading to Tyneside.
After landing Kenedy on loan from Chelsea last week to complete their first January deal, Newcastle are left somewhat scrambling for new additions in the final 48 hours of the transfer window.
With Dwight Gayle and Joselu both struggling to score consistently, adding a new striker has been a priority for manager Rafael Benitez, but Newcastle appear to have missed out on a top target today.
The Daily Mail report that Newcastle are furious having thought they had a deal for Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge tied up, only for him to U-turn at the last minute and join Premier League relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion instead.
It’s claimed that Newcastle had set up a £1.5million deal to take Sturridge on loan, paying all of his £130,000-a-week wages, after the striker spoke to Newcastle boss Benitez about the move.
However, Sturridge ended up choosing West Brom for geographical reasons, leaving Newcastle furious at missing out on what would have been a major coup.
With a deal for Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen also unlikely, it’s claimed that Newcastle could turn their attention back to Leicester City striker Islam Slimani, though they may have to offer up a huge deal to tempt them into letting him go before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.
