Newcastle United are confident Aston Villa ‘cannot derail’ their bid to sign Callum Wilson and are now finalising a deal for the Bournemouth striker, according to The Sunday Mirror (6 September, page 65).
It is claimed Wilson ‘has his heart set’ on a move to Newcastle and ‘will reject any overtures’ from Villa Park.
Aston Villa are said to have made an offer worth £21 million – around £4m more than the one the Magpies previously had accepted – on Saturday.
But Newcastle, it seems, will come out on top and could even keep Matt Ritchie – who is now likely to stay at St James’ Park despite talk he would return to Bournemouth as part of the Wilson deal, according to The Sunday Mirror.
The newspaper adds that the 28-year-old could be joined at Newcastle by the Norwich City left-back, Jamal Lewis, for whom they have agreed a fee of £13.5m.

Wilson, who was born and raised near Aston Villa territory, in Coventry, has won four caps for England and scored one goal.
How good a signing would Wilson be for Newcastle / Aston Villa?
