Burnley and Napoli have joined the race to sign Benfica defender Nuno Tavares although, according to O Jogo, Newcastle United are at the front of the queue for his signature.
It is rare that a transfer window goes by without Newcastle trying to sign a new left-back.
And as Jamal Lewis struggles to convince during his debut season at St James’ Park, it seems the Magpies are once again scouring the market for something shiny and, well, a little more defensively stable.
Lisbon-born 21-year-old is a long-term target for the Tyneside giants.
Newcastle were willing to pay £14 million for Tavares in the summer of 2019 and, with Benfica toiling down in fourth in the Primeira Liga table, one of Portugal’s biggest clubs may have no choice but to cash in this time around.

O Jogo adds that both Burnley and Napoli have expressed their interest in the attack-minded left-back in recent times.
Tavares, a Portugal U21 international, has produced three assists in 20 games this term; one of the few bright spots in a dreadful season for a Benfica side who were title favourites not so long ago after spending £70 million on the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Nicolas Otamendi and Darwin Nunez.
