Newcastle United reportedly wanted to sign Boubakary Soumare.
According to Le 10 Sport, Newcastle United failed with a move to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare on transfer deadline day.
The Magpies enjoyed a productive final day of the transfer window, bringing in Monaco left back Antonio Barreca on loan before breaking their transfer record to sign Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron.
Rafael Benitez will have been pleased with a couple of major additions after struggling through much of the January window, at least in a transfer sense.
He didn’t manage to bring in another midfielder though, and whilst that may become a top priority over the summer, Benitez appeared to launch a bold move for one central midfielder on Thursday.
Le 10 Sport in France claim that Newcastle made a last-gasp move for Lille midfielder Soumare, but the Ligue 1 side rejected their deadline day approach.
Soumare, 19, came up through the Paris Saint-Germain ranks before heading to Lille in 2017, and he has yet to start a Ligue 1 game this season, making 10 substitute appearances.
Soumare has been dubbed as the ‘new Yaya Toure’ in some quarters, and Sky Sports reported last January that Manchester City were ready to launch a £35million move for him.
Yet having failed to play much this season, Newcastle seemingly tried their luck for the box-to-box midfielder, but couldn’t tempt Lille into a deadline day deal.
