Newcastle United reportedly face competition for OGC Nice superstar Amine Gouiri, with Ligue 1 side Rennes now entering the race to sign the talented attacker.

According to L’Equipe via Top Mercato, the French club are confident that they could secure a deal to sign the ‘super talent’ Gouiri ahead of Premier League opposition, with Newcastle just one club from the English top-flight who are interested in the 22-year-old forward, who last year was one of Nice’s standout performers.

The Olympique Lyonnais academy graduate bagged double digits in both goals and assists last season, and Gouiri’s style of play, Algerian heritage and Lyon background has seen the youngster, as you would expect, likened to Real Madrid captain and current favourite for the Ballon d’Or award Karim Benzema.

With a reported price tag of £30m, it makes sense why clubs such as Newcastle and Rennes are now interested in signing the attacker, with Gouiri an under-the-radar pick to make France’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year if the forward continues this level of performance.

Indeed, Newcastle are eager to sign an attacker this summer with Callum Wilson’s injury record a big concern for Eddie Howe, and Gouiri could be perfect as a backup to the England international or even a straight replacement given the Frenchman’s ability, age and potential.

With Newcastle having plenty to spend this summer, Gouiri could be the star attacking signing fans have been waiting for all summer, and with Rennes now interested, the Magpies should be getting off their fee to sign the future France international before it is too late.

Gouiri has proven since moving to Nice to be an incredible talent who could go far in the game if he can maintain the levels of performances the youngster has been hitting in recent seasons, and for Newcastle, they will be hopeful of landing the 22-year-old over Rennes amid their interest in signing the Ligue 1 talent.

After all, Gouiri has proven to be an exceptional performer in France’s top-flight, and the attacker could be ready for a move to the Premier League this summer, with Newcastle an ideal candidate to sign the former Lyon prospect if they can beat Rennes to the forward’s signature.
