According to The Sun, Newcastle United are interested in signing Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson at the end of the season.
The Magpies have battled through some disappointments this season to put themselves in the box seat for promotion back to the Premier League, as they sit top of the table with eight games to go.
If Newcastle do, as expected, win promotion back to the top flight, fans may be expecting a marquee signing to show that the Magpies mean business – and manager Rafael Benitez reportedly has his eye on on top target.
The Sun claim that Newcastle are keen to land Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson, and are prepared to mount a summer move to snap him up.
Sigurdsson, 27, has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers since leaving Tottenham Hotspur to rejoin Swansea in 2014, racking up 18 goals and 13 assists in his previous two seasons.
This term, Sigurdsson has been Swansea’s shining light in a disappointing season, as he has tallied an impressive eight goals and 11 assists to cement himself as one of the Premier League’s top attacking midfielders.

Whilst Swansea are in a decent position to avoid relegation, they will have to fend off interest in Sigurdsson’s signature from a number of clubs, with Everton, Southampton and West Ham also believed to be keen.
Newcastle would no doubt love to sign Sigurdsson, but the report claims that the deal could be worth just £15million – and that’s certainly hard to believe.
Just last week, The Mirror claimed that Swansea wanted a whopping £35million for Sigurdsson, which seems a more reasonable price than just £15million, with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley required to splash the cash if he wants to land the Icelandic international.
