According to the Chronicle, the club are planning to make one or two high calibre signings to fix problems that Benitez has identified in the early stages of the season.
The newspaper reports that the club had scouts watching Genk in Belgium, while another was sent to watch Austria against Wales.
No potential targets have been named as yet, although an attacking midfielder may be top of the list given the current squad is currently lacking that creative midfielder this season.
