Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Switzerland international Fabian Schar.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle have included Fabian Schar on their list of potential targets as the Magpies look to bolster their defensive options.

Rafa Benitez has endured another frustrating window thus far. Newcastle have made three signings this summer, with Martin Dubravka signing permanently, Kenedy returning for another loan spell and Ki Sung-yueng joining on a free transfer.

The Mail reports that Benitez has his eye on Ki’s former Swansea teammate Federico Fernandez, but Schar is also a player that Newcastle have on their wishlist this summer.

It is not clear whether the Magpies are planning to seriously pursue a deal for the 26-year-old, but it could certainly be argued that he would be a superb signing for Newcastle this summer if anything did happen.

Schar made 25 La Liga appearances last season, and appeared in all of Switzerland’s games at the World Cup in Russia. He would bring a lot of composure to the defence at St James’ Park, but Schar is certainly not afraid to get stuck in either.

And with Deportivo gearing up for a campaign in the second tier after being relegated last season, it may not be too difficult to convince Schar to make the move to Tyneside if Newcastle make an acceptable bid.

Unfortunately however, it would be little surprise if the Toon Army were avoiding getting carried away over the links given how their window has played out so far.
