Newcastle United have been linked with a host of midfielders ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are currently somewhat short in the middle of the park and will likely want to bolster their ranks.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe even admitted he didn’t want Jonjo Shelvey to leave St James’ Park in January.

Craig Hope has now provided an update on the Magpies’ summer transfer agenda on the Daily Mail.

He claimed that Bournemouth’s Philip Billing is one of the midfielders on the Newcastle radar.

“Bournemouth’s Philip Billing could become a squad option at a reasonable price,” wrote Hope.

“Especially if the Cherries are relegated.”

Billing is one of several midfield options Eddie Howe is reportedly monitoring ahead of the summer window.

James Maddison, Khephren Thuram, and Scott McTominay are also apparently on the Newcastle radar.

As for Declan Rice and Mason Mount, the Magpies have interest in both players, added the report.

However, Newcastle are not willing to shatter their wage structure in the process.

‘He’s been brilliant’

Newcastle have enjoyed a superb season and look set for a European finish, maybe even the Champions league.

Since the change of ownership, the fans can finally dream again. Trophies and glory are very much on the cards.

At the same time, Newcastle need to take things slowly and build sustainably.

With that in mind, a player like Billing would be a great shout for the Magpies.

The £15million man is a talented and versatile player who works incredibly hard and has Premier League experience.

Back in 2017, Alan Shearer lauded Billing on Match of the Day for his FA Cup display against Manchester City.

“He’s been brilliant,” Shearer said – via the Daily Mail – of the Dane, who played for Huddersfield at the time.

“It’s one thing playing at the level he plays at but to come on this stage now live on television and play the way he is, against the players he’s played against, he’s been superb.”

Billing has certainly had a great career, and joining a club that’s heading for the stars would be a great step up.
