Eddie Howe is reportedly keen to sign Fabian Schar down to a new contract despite Newcastle United eyeing defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window.

According to the Athletic, the Magpies manager is keen to extend the Swiss international’s deal at the club, with Schar’s current contract at Newcastle, worth a reported £40,000-a-week, set to expire at the end of this season.

Schar has become a focal point of the Newcastle defence since the arrival of Howe, with the former FC Basel star starting all but one Premier League fixture under the English manager as the Toon’s form and defence have improved dramatically.

With the defender’s contract expiring in the summer, though, it is natural that the Newcastle club chief is eager to sign Schar down to a new deal, even with the 30-year-old likely to be replaced in the starting XI next season.

This summer is expected to be another massive transfer window for Newcastle, with the centre-back position likely to be targeted as Howe sets out his plan to get the Magpies shooting up the Premier League standings.

Indeed, 2022 is expected to be an exciting one for Newcastle, and although Schar might not be a starter for next season, signing the centre-back down to a new contract is a smart decision from the northeast club.

The Swiss international has enjoyed a resurgence under Howe at Newcastle, and with a new contract in the pipeline, Schar is being richly rewarded for his performances in recent weeks that have dragged the Toon away from the relegation zone.

Whilst the defender might not be a guaranteed starter next season, Schar more than deserves a new contract with Newcastle given his form this campaign as well as for being a good option for cup competitions and injuries next campaign.
