Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing the Benfica ace.
According to Portuguese media outlet Record, Newcastle are interested in signing Benfica goalkeeper Bruno Varela, as Rafa Benitez looks to add more competition to his goalkeeping ranks at St James’ Park.
Varela, 23, began his career with Benfica, but he has only made 35 appearances for the senior side, although he has managed to keep 14 clean sheets.
Portuguese publication Record claims that Rafa is keen to bring Varela to Tyneside this summer, although he will face competition from Premier League rivals Watford in the race for the Portuguese’s signature.

Standing at 6ft 3in tall, the Benfica goalkeeper possesses an imposing physique, and he is a competent shot stopper.
He is relatively inexperienced, however, having made only 35 appearances for Benfica. That wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, though.
Rafa wants to sign a goalkeeper who can serve as Martin Dúbravka’s understudy, and Varela could be just the man for the job.
According to Transfer Markt, the 23-year-old is valued at £7.2 million, and in today’s market, that would have to be considered as decent value for Newcastle.
