Newcastle United have had strange start to their season. The Magpies were brilliant against West Ham on the opening day, but they looked a completely different side a week later when they were hammered by Brighton at home.

Steve Bruce’s side had a terrible game against Tottenham last weekend too. Newcastle had just one shot target in the entire game, and it took a fortunate penalty at the end of the game to take a point back home to St. James’ Park.

Callum Wilson’s arrival was a big boost for the Magpies. The Englishman scored on his debut and converted the penalty against Spurs. But it looks like Newcastle are looking to bring in another striker to support him, Carroll and Joelinton up top.

Get French Football News claim that Newcastle have initiated contact to sign Guingamp striker Matthias Phaeton. The 20-year-old Frenchman has had a good start to the season, scoring twice in just 34 minutes of action.

Phaeton still has three years left on his contract at Guingamp. The Ligue 2 side will seek a sizeable compensation if he were to leave, but a fee should not be too much of a problem for Newcastle if they are really keen.

The report claims that the Magpies have made a simple enquiry at the moment. It is unclear if they will actually follow up on a move, considering the transfer window will shut in three days.

A young striker of Phaeton’s potential would be a very good addition for Newcastle. The Frenchman will be one for the future, but he will provide some much-needed depth to Bruce if one of his strikers suffers an injury.
