Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba has been linked with a return to Anderlecht.
Belgian outlet DH claim Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba has been training at former side Anderlecht after Rafa Benitez gave his players a three-day break this week.
The Sun claimed the 23-year-old is interesting the Belgian champions earlier this month, as well as Anderlecht’s 2017-18 Champions League opponents Celtic.
It is said that Mbemba returned to his old side to maintain his fitness during the break, donning Anderlecht training gear and working out on a treadmill with Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s side.
However, the report states that there is little chance of a return to Belgium for the DR Congo international, as even a loan move would simply be too expensive for the European outfit.
It is claimed that Mbemba would “like to revive” his time at Anderlecht, but with just a week remaining in the transfer window it is unlikely that Anderlecht will be able to secure a move. However, it is believed that many clubs are interested.
Mbemba has struggled to break his way into the Newcastle first team this season, appearing in just nine Premier League matches and failing to even make the Toon squad of 18 players for their last three league games.
The likes of Florian Lejeune, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles have kept him out of the side and although he has a contract at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2021, it is unlikely that he will leave the club this month.
