Newcastle United have seemingly suffered a blow in the race to sign Niklas Sule, with Bayern Munich set to award the German international a new contract with an increased salary.

According to TZ, Julian Nagelsmann is eager to retain the 26-year-old beyond this season. Sule’s contract is due to expire in 2022, with Newcastle one of the many clubs keen on signing the Bundesliga titan.

Sule has been a key part of Bayern’s squad this season. With the former Hoffenheim star regaining his spot in central defence as well as filling out on right-back on a handful of occasions as well.

And it is this form that is pushing Bayern to hand the defender a new deal. With TZ reporting that the Bavarian giants are eager to hand Sule a contract worth over €10m (£8.4m) a year.

Indeed, a new deal would foil any plans Newcastle have of signing Sule. With centre-back arguably the number one position the Toon have to address in both January and 2022 in the summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side shipped three goals in the English coach’s first match in charge of the northeast club. And Newcastle’s Premier League status could hinge on a new defender coming in for January.

Sule already seemed like a lofty signing for Newcastle, yet the UEFA Champions League winner appears to be now well beyond Howe’s grasp with Bayern planning on handing the defender a new contract.

Indeed, the decision could force Newcastle to look elsewhere for defenders. And with centre-backs needed urgently, the Toon could look to sign someone in December rather than wait out until the summer, where it is unlikely if they will still be in the Premier League.
