Report: Newcastle could use Dwight Gayle to land West Brom’s Oli Burke

Newcastle United are reportedly considering using Dwight Gayle as part of the deal to land West Bromwich Albion’s Oliver Burke.

According to a report from the Northern Echo, Newcastle are considering leaving the door open for Dwight Gayle to join West Brom on a permanent basis as they target Oli Burke.

The Northern Echo reports that Burke is one of the players on Rafa Benitez’s wishlist with the January transfer window gradually looming on the horizon, but his asking price is likely to prove a stumbling block for the Premier League side.

Burke was signed by the Baggies for £15 million last summer, but has struggled to justify the club’s decision to sign him having made only two starts in the league since moving to The Hawthorns. He was most recently seen playing for their under-21 team in the Checkatrade Trophy.

The Northern Echo suggests that Newcastle would not be willing to meet the kind of asking price that West Brom are likely to set, but could consider including Gayle in the negotiations.

The report adds that Gayle is open to the idea of staying at West Brom permanently if the terms are right, so it would appear that Newcastle may attempt to find out whether there is scope for a deal to be done that involves the two players.

Ideal outcome for West Brom?

Should Newcastle decide to pursue a deal that would ultimately see Burke heading to St James’ Park and Gayle remaining with the Baggies permanently, the chances are that West Brom would initially be deemed the winners from those negotiations.

Agreeing the finances of any potential move is unlikely to be straightforward, but keeping Gayle will be a huge boost for Darren Moore’s side given his start to life with the club.

His form has been exceptional. And while Burke clearly has a lot of potential, if Moore has his doubts about his future with the club, then using him to keep Gayle would be a very smart move.

West Brom would certainly appear to be the victors in the short-term, but perhaps Benitez may feel that it could be Newcastle who have the last laugh should they sign Burke.
