The Mail claim Newcastle could sign Leeds ace Patrick Bamford if the Whites suffer relegation this week. The Toon are looking to bring in a striker and Bamford’s name has been mentioned, if Leeds go down.

Bamford, 28, proved many wrong when he helped Leeds gain promotion last summer. He scored a huge 17 goals in his first proper Premier League campaign, also laying on eight assists as the Whites finished in a lofty ninth.

But this season, he has suffered numerous injury issues – notably, his ankle and hamstring. He could be fit for the final game of the season against Brentford, but it remains unlikely. Leeds are in serious danger of relegation.

Bamford is not the only Leeds player Newcastle have considered. Fabrizio Romano says Raphinha is a player Newcastle would “love”, while Kalvin Phillips is on the Toon’s radar. Now, they could sign England man Bamford.

It would be a sensible signing. Bamford is English, would not cost the world if Leeds did go down, and would offer them a different style of striker to Callum Wilson or Chris Wood. Injuries are a concern, however.

If Bamford can rid himself of those issues, then a move to Tyneside makes sense. But would Bamford want to join Newcastle, given the competition alongside Wilson and Wood? Bamford has a contract until June 2026.

That gives Leeds plenty of room to request what they want for the striker. But realistically, they know they will have to sell if relegation does occur – and Bamford might get them north of £20million. Time will tell.
