The rebuilding is officially underway at Newcastle United.
Saudi Public Investment Fund completed a £300 million takeover of the North-East club precisely two weeks ago.
And on Wednesday, it was announced that Newcastle had parted ways with manager Steve Bruce.
A number of names are linked with the job at St James’s Park – none more prominent than Paulo Fonseca right now – but the Magpies are also on the hunt for a director of football.
Luis Campos’s name has been floated over the past week or so but according to a report from the Netherlands, Newcastle might be lining up another exciting name.
De Telegraaf has reported that Ajax maestro Marc Overmars is on United’s radar.
Overmars has been the Dutch giants’ sporting director for nine years, in which time they have won six major trophies.
In addition to that, the 48-year-old, who represented Arsenal and Barcelona during his career, has overseen some £550 million in player sales [Football London and Transfermarkt] – almost double what PIF paid for the club.
Tempting
Given the stellar work he has done with the Dutch champions, Overmars has been a much-sought after figure for a while.
But Newcastle could also struggle because although a spell at St James’s Park must be very tempting, he is clearly committed to Ajax in a major way, evident by the fact that he is still there.
It remains to be seen whether he’s even a genuine target but, given his work in the Netherlands, why wouldn’t he be?
Newcastle clearly have very big plans and hiring a big name to oversee the rebuild of the playing staff is absolutely vital.
