According to The Guardian, Newcastle United could lodge a bid for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse this summer.

After yet another spectacular season for the Saints, the Premier League’s elite are once again casting an eye over the Southampton captain this summer, with Arsenal, Tottenham and now Newcastle all linked.

Ward-Prowse has proven his ability in the Premier League for almost a decade now, and, truth be told, it’s about time he challenged himself at a higher level.

Of course, Newcastle aren’t quite that club yet. They can’t even offer the England international the chance to play in Europe this season, but if the free-kick master were to give it a couple of years, then he could be challenging for top honours with the Magpies.

However, getting the ‘complete package‘ of a midfielder out of St Mary’s may be easier said than done.

Born on the south coast, Ward-Prowse has been loyal to Southampton for almost 20 years having joined the academy at just eight years old, and you have to feel that he wouldn’t ditch his boyhood club for Newcastle at this point in his career.

With all due respect to Newcastle, they’re not leagues ahead of Southampton at the moment, and, in all honesty, Ward-Prowse would largely be moving for the money, and after staying loyal to Southampton for so long, it’s hard to imagine him risking tarnishing his legacy with a move like this.

Of course, stranger things have happened and money talks in football, but with Arsenal and Spurs also keen, it’s hard to picture Newcastle leading this transfer race.
