According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United were interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, but have now cooled their interest ahead of the transfer window.

Whilst manager Rafael Benitez has been able to bring in the likes of Javier Manquillo, Florian Lejeune, Mikel Merino, Jacob Murphy and Joselu to St. James’ Park this summer, has he been frustrated in his pursuit of a number of targets.

With just over 24 hours of the transfer window left to go, Newcastle are expected to be targeting a number of players, with a new goalkeeper potentially on Benitez’s wish list.

Rob Elliot has started the season as Newcastle’s first choice goalkeeper but may not be the long-term solution, whilst Matz Sels has been loaned out to Anderlecht, Tim Krul is frozen out and question marks hang over Karl Darlow’s future.

Now, The Telegraph report that Newcastle had considered a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Kevin Trapp, but have now cooled their interested ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Trapp, 27, has been relegated to second choice by PSG, as Alphonse Areola has started all four of their league games so far this season, meaning a move could be on the cards.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle reignite their interest in Trapp, but the German would certainly be a coup for the Magpies, and an immediate first choice stopper for Benitez to call upon.

Trapp, who has Champions League experience with PSG as well as a Germany cap to his name, possesses smart reflexes and can command his area on crosses, whilst also being quick off his line to snuff out danger.

He hasn’t been without his criticism in Paris; many suggest that he has cracked under pressure a few times, and he endured a miserable pre-season clash against Tottenham Hotspur, but he is just 27 and can still improve under Benitez, whilst already bringing top-level experience – and whilst Elliot has enjoyed a decent start to the season, Trapp could be a major upgrade, if Newcastle renew their interest.
