England’s Jermain Defoe celebrates scoring
A report in The Sun has suggested that Newcastle United are considering making a move for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe this summer as Rafa Benitez begins to make preparations for a probable Premier League return.
According to The Sun, Defoe is attracting plenty of attention following another excellent season for him personally, with two of his former clubs, Bournemouth and West Ham ready to make a move at the end of the campaign.
A recent report from the Daily Mail suggested that the 34-year-old would be able to leave the Stadium of Light on a free transfer in the summer if Sunderland are relegated. And with the Black Cats 10 points off safety with eight games to go, it is looking increasingly likely that David Moyes’ men will be playing Championship football next term.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s win over Burton in midweek has taken the Magpies one step closer to securing promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking, and The Sun are suggesting that Benitez has identified Defoe as one of the targets that could help the side re-establish themselves at the highest level.
Though Defoe has entered the twilight of his career, his form for club and country suggests that he has a lot more to give before he hangs up his boots.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
The former Tottenham man has scored 14 times in the top flight this season to add to the 15 strikes he got last term, and with the striker being handed a recent recall back into the England team, he will surely be determined to do everything he can to hold onto that spot for as long as possible.
And if Newcastle do secure promotion this season and swap places with rivals Sunderland in the process, then signing Defoe on a free transfer would surely be a brilliant piece of business from Benitez’s men.
