According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are weighing up a move to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Aaron Mooy this summer.

The Magpies look to be safe from relegation for another year, though questions marks linger over manager Rafael Benitez’s future, with his contract expiring this summer.

Newcastle are still preparing for the summer transfer window, and a new midfielder will be key, given doubts over the futures of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame.

Now, The Northern Echo claim that Huddersfield ace Mooy is on the radar, with the Magpies considering moves for him as well as Fulham’s Tom Cairney.

Mooy is likely to be the most in-demand player in this relegation-bound Huddersfield side, having impressed for the Terriers over the last three years.

His ability on the ball and from set pieces, as well as his work rate, have made him a key part of the Huddersfield side, and the Australian international is unlikely to fancy a drop to the Championship having excelled in the Premier League.

Newcastle wanted Mooy last summer according to The World Game, and whilst a move makes sense now, owner Mike Ashley may not agree.

Ashley wants to bring in younger players, which is why Salomon Rondon’s future is up in the air, and with Mooy set to turn 29 in September, he may not fit into Ashley’s plan for the future.
