Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to switch their attention to the Aston Villa star if their bid for Andros Townsend proves unsuccessful.

Rafael Benitez Manager

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (08/07; page 60), Newcastle plan to switch their attention to Aston Villa star Albert Adomah should they be unable to bring Andros Townsend to St James’ Park this summer.

Rafa Benitez appears to be seriously interested in re-signing Townsend during this window having previously sold the winger when the Magpies were relegated from the top flight. However, Crystal Palace seemingly have no intention of letting the England international go easily.

The Sun on Sunday (08/07; page 60) reports that Palace want £20 million for the 26-year-old and will only leave the path clear for him to make the move once they have a replacement through the door.

And perhaps sensing how difficult it could become to get a deal done, Benitez has identified an alternative target, with The Sun on Sunday (08/07; page 60) reporting that Adomah is the player that Newcastle will pursue if Townsend proves unobtainable.

In normal circumstances, it would surely take a stunning offer to tempt Steve Bruce to consider selling Adomah this summer. The 30-year-old scored 14 goals in the Championship last season to help Aston Villa to the Championship play-off final.

However, with the Villans’ financial concerns well publicised in recent times, Newcastle may perhaps feel that they may be able to land him for a lower figure than a player of his quality would normally cost.

Despite establishing himself as one of the most lethal wide-men in the second tier, Adomah is something of an unknown quantity at the highest level having only played two games in the top flight for Middlesbrough before joining Villa in 2016.

But given that he has scored 61 goals since moving to the second tier with Bristol City in 2010 and provided 30 assists since joining Boro in 2013, it would appear that he has earned the chance to move up a level. Whether Newcastle offer him that opportunity remains to be seen.
