According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp on loan for the rest of the season as Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his options between the sticks.

The Magpies go into the final 16 games of the league season 13th in the Premier League table. They are just two points clear of the bottom three but their defence has arguably not been their biggest problem, with 30 goals conceded in 22 games, while they have only managed to score 20 times in the top flight.

Germany's goalkeeper Kevin Trapp reacts during the international friendly football match Germany against France in Cologne on November 14, 2017.

Only one team in the bottom-half has conceded fewer goals, and they have three very decent goalkeepers on their books, with Karl Darlow hugely important during their Championship title win last year, Rob Elliot shining at times this term and Freddie Woodman clearly one for the future at St James’ Park.

Nevertheless, Benitez is keen to sign another goalkeeper, with the Mail reporting that they have seen a enquiry for Joe Hart rejected while Kika Casilla is also on their radar.

The Mail adds that Newcastle are now keen on signing Trapp until the summer. Before this season, the German had been an important player for the Ligue 1 giants, but has struggled for game-time this term.

It will be interesting to see whether PSG are willing to let the 27-year-old leave temporarily given that he has filled in for Alphonse Areola when he has not been fit, but given his quality, it would undoubtedly be a boost for Newcastle’s survival hopes if they did manage to pull off a deal.
