According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle are confident that they will be able to hold onto Florian Lejeune this summer amid reports that Sevilla have earmarked the centre-back as their number one target.

Lejeune proved to be an excellent signing for the Magpies ahead of their return to the Premier League last summer. The Frenchman made 24 appearances in the top flight as Rafa Benitez’s men not only stayed up but managed to bag a top-half finish.

His form has not gone unnoticed however, with the Chronicle reporting that Sevilla have put the 27-year-old at the top of their wishlist and the La Liga side are expected to make a bid in the near future.

However, the Chronicle adds that Benitez is optimistic that Lejeune will be going nowhere with four years left on his contract and the Newcastle boss believing that he has the potential to get significantly better.

It would be a huge boost for the Magpies if they were able to hold onto Lejeune – who earns £38,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – and centre-back partner Jamaal Lascelles this summer.

The pair formed a brilliant understanding and that should only develop in the coming season, especially with Martin Dubravka now signed on a permanent basis. And with those solid foundations in place, there seems little reason why the Magpies cannot push to perhaps go on and better what they achieved this past season.
