According to Eurosport, Newcastle United are confident of agreeing terms with Kieran Trippier, but they need to negotiate some clauses that will come into effect if the Magpies are relegated.
Newcastle have been linked with Trippier for quite some time now, and it looks as though this deal could get over the line in January.
However, before Trippier puts pen to paper on a contract at the Tyneside club, he reportedly needs some assurances in his deal regarding what will happen if United are relegated.
It’s unknown what these clauses will be. They could involve a relegation release clause or even an option to terminate his contract upon relegation, and we couldn’t blame Trippier if he’s asking for these types of assurances.
The right-back would be taking a massive gamble if he swapped Atletico Madrid for Newcastle United. After all, his current team are gearing up for a Champions League Round of 16 tie, while Newcastle are battling relegation.
With all due respect, Trippier is much too good of a player to be playing Championship football next season, and with the Qatar World Cup on the horizon, you can understand why he may want to make sure he’ll have a route out of Newcastle if the worst-case scenario were to unfold and the Magpies were relegated.
Newcastle reportedly remain confident of signing Trippier, but it will be interesting to see the clauses that are negotiated into his deal.
