The Evening Chronicle have claimed that Newcastle United are close to agreeing a new deal for attacking midfielder Sean Longstaff, ending speculation over his future.

The 20-year-old’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season but after impressing Rafa Benitez throughout pre-season and an impressive loan spell at Blackpool last term, Newcastle have taken action.

The report claims Longstaff is attracting interest from France, Spain and even one team in the Bundesliga, while Celtic are said to have sent a scout to Whitley Park recently to watch his progression.

But after “positive discussions”, Newcastle and Longstaff are ready to agree terms on a new long-term deal to keep the Geordie at St. James’ Park for the foreseeable future.

Longstaff even made his debut this season for Newcastle, playing the entire 90 minutes of the Toon’s 3-1 loss to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup second round earlier this season.

He scored nine goals from midfield in 45 appearances for Blackpool last season, while also impressing north of the border in the Scottish Premiership with Kilmarnock during his short career – finding the net three times in 17 games.

The youngster will now have his sights set on trying to break into Benitez’s first team, with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Mo Diame, Isaac Hayden and Ki Sung-yueng.
